About Lideres

Who we are

The Latino population needs more leaders - public officials, businesspeople, activists, and organizers - who serve Latino communities and the cause of social justice at the local and national levels. We are a young community; our median age is 26. The National Council of La Raza (NCLR) Líderes Initiative is investing in a whole generation of young Latinos.

The NCLR Líderes Initiative is designed to increase the number, capacity, and influence of young Latino leaders in the United States by building a national network that supports and strengthens programs and organizations that develop Latino youth.

The Líderes Initiative uses a strategic, institutional-building approach to leadership development. We support hundreds of local, community-based programs and campus-based student organizations that serve Latino youth. By strengthening our community leadership infrastructure, we amplify the collective impact of thousands of young Latinos, and build a national movement.

What we do

The Líderes Initiative operates through three interrelated strategies:

1. A National Líderes Network

The Líderes Network is one of the largest databases of Latino community-based youth programs and campus-based student organizations in the nation. Network members share information about issues, opportunities, and resources of interest to young Latino leaders. The Líderes Initiative also identifies effective programs and organizations within the network, highlighting successes and creating opportunities for information-sharing and collaboration among members.

2. Capacity-Building Assistance

The Líderes Initiative provides expertise on best practices in leadership and Latino youth development, as well as general program and organizational development to strengthen network members and improve their efficiency and effectiveness.

The Líderes Initiative also manages the Líderes Campus Alliance, a group of Latino college student organizations specifically working to increase youth leadership and advance positive social change on their campuses and in communities throughout the United States.

3. Convening and Coalition-Building

The Líderes Initiative convenes young Latino leaders regionally and nationally to increase collaboration and networking.

Regional Líderes Congresos

Líderes Congresos convene young people on a regional level to discuss issues of concern and connect with existing community leaders and resources. Congresos provide a forum to share ideas and discuss solutions; to educate, empower, and energize one another about issues pertaining to Latino youth.

National Líderes Summit

The National Líderes Summit brings together young leaders from throughout the country to develop leadership and teamwork skills, discuss community involvement and empowerment, and learn about national Latino issues. The Líderes Summit is held in conjunction with the NCLR Annual Conference.
