NCLR-GWU Lideres Congreso Recap Page
Welcome to the NCLR-GWU Congreso Recap Page!

Thank you to everyone that attended the NCLR Líderes Congreso Wednesday, March 5, 2008.
NCLR staff proudly welcomed the more than 70 youth that gathered in Washington D.C. from all over the country to learn about pressing issues affecting Latinos in the US.
We hope that if you attended this Congreso, you will take the enthusiasm of the event back to your home communities and begin enacting change today!
Líderes has built this page to give you access to the presentations, toolkits, and guides that we shared with you at the conference.
Please use these tools and reach out to us with any questions. We’re happy to be your resource as you continue to grow and learn as Latino Líderes!
Sincerely,
Berenice Bonilla

Congreso Follow-Up: Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act (JJDPA)
Because of your help at NCLR’s 2008 Advocacy Day, Congress now knows that the Latino community cares about what happens to Latino youth in the juvenile justice system. We have heard from many congressional representatives that the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act (JJDPA) will be introduced in Congress soon after the spring recess. We will need your assistance to contact your representatives in Congress to let them know how important the Act is for the Latino youth in your state and urge them to support JJDPA. TESTIMONIALS
Having the privilege of attending Advocacy Day with NCLR was a great honor for both me and Carlos. We were given the opportunity to work hands-on and meet with influential people in our government. We thank NCLR for reminding us that our voices count and for helping us understand that we are the leaders of the next generation. We learned the importance of youth activism and the immense impact that we can have on everyone’s future. They say actions speak louder than words, and that is exactly what we did. We took action by raising our voice and attending National Advocacy Day. This experience has made us more determined to make sure that our voices have a lasting impact.

One if my most memorable experiences took place in Washington, D.C., thanks to NCLR. The Líderes Congreso was a blessing to me. I learned the actual meaning of advocacy and lobbying. I also had the opportunity to learn principles of leadership and how to be an effective leader in my community. To be an advocate means to plead one’s cause--on National Advocacy Day, I had a chance to do just that. NCLR opened a door for me to be a voice for my community and friends, who have been affected by unjust laws and media that publish hate speech.
