Answers to Frequently Asked Questions for Participants
The NCLR Líderes Summit is an intense five-day leadership program that brings together more than 300 students, activists, and young Latino leaders (ages 14-25) from all over the country. Participants develop leadership and teamwork skills, discuss community involvement and empowerment, and learn about Latino community issues, while also participating in other NCLR Annual Conference activities. The NCLR Líderes Summit is a program of the NCLR Líderes Initiative, a national project designed to increase the number, capacity, and influence of young Latino leaders in the United States.
We will address the following topics in this year’s workshops: youth and drugs, developing communication skills, planning and implementing effective Latino youth programs, leadership development, Latino youth and HIV, advocacy on college campuses, juvenile justice, voter registration, résumé writing and interviewing skills, defining youth culture, financial literacy, and increasing civic engagement.

Dress Code:
We ask that participants dress comfortably and casually, but avoid wearing revealing clothing or jeans. Adult attendees usually dress business casual or business attire (collared shirts and dress pants for men and blouses and pants/skirts for women, or suits). This is a business event, and it should serve as an opportunity to prepare you for your future in the professional world. Don’t worry! The Summit will also give you an opportunity to express yourself. Throughout Conference, there will be dances and other social events where you can wear comfortable clothing. For example, there is a pool-side reception on Monday evening, July 14. This is NOT a pool party, but a reception where participants are expected to wear clothing similar to what they would wear for a dance – casual to dressy clothing within limits of professional attire. At the conclusion of Annual Conference, there is a main event where formal attire is suggested (dresses for women and suits for men). Finally, don’t forget the basics: sunscreen, an umbrella and of course, your toiletries!
Bring Résumés/Business Cards:
The Summit is a great opportunity for you to network. There is no better way to get your name out there than to have it printed on a business card. If you do not have business cards, there are companies who will print business cards for an affordable price or for free in exchange for advertising on the back. For example, try www.vistaprint.com or do a web search for similar businesses. We suggest you bring copies of your résumé as well. At least one of the NCLR Líderes Summit workshops will focus on preparing/improving a résumé; and NCLR’s Latino Expo USA will give you an opportunity to pass around your résumé and possibly land an internship or a job. Come prepared, you never know who you will run into.
Rules and Regulations:
All Líderes Summit attendees are required to follow a common set of rules and regulations for maximum benefit and safety of all involved. Please read the NCLR Líderes Summit Rules and Regulations carefully; you will be subject to them as a condition of your participation in the Summit.
