NCLR Best Buy Emerging Latino Leaders Scholarship Program

The winners for the NCLR Best Buy Emerging Latino Leaders Scholarship Program have been selected and notified.

National Council of La Raza (NCLR) and Best Buy Children's Foundation (Best Buy) support Latino youth who are equally committed to academic achievement and volunteerism . The Best Buy Children’s Foundation is funding the NCLR-Best Buy Latino Leaders Scholarship Program to provide an opportunity for Latino high school seniors to share their leadership experiences and support their efforts to benefit from higher education. Please address the following topic:

Describe how you have taken an active leadership role in your school or community. How have you used your leadership experience to help create and broaden opportunities for other Latino youth? Please provide specific examples of your past and current leadership skills and experiences.

Essays should include a brief description of individual leadership work with a group or community organization and how the student plans to continue his or her involvement in the Latino community.

How to Participate
High school seniors of Hispanic descent currently enrolled in high school (with a minimum GPA of 2.0) can participate in the NCLR- Best Buy Emerging Latino Leaders Scholarship Program. The application is a two-step process. Essay submissions will be accepted through the electronic application process. Supporting documents must be mailed. Please read the Rules and Guidelines page for complete instructions.

Selection Process
Ten winners will be selected by an independent panel of judges. All winners will be notified by Friday, November 29, 2007. The decisions of the judges are final.

Prizes
There will be ten scholarship winners. Two grand prize winners will receive a one-time payment of $10,000. Three winners will each receive a one-time payment of $5,000. Five winners will each receive a one-time payment of $1,000.

In addition, NCLR will award 15 scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each for essays written by youth enrolled in schools affiliated with NCLR and the AmeriCorps Latino Empowerment through National Service (LENS) Program. Contest participants attending an NCLR school or participating in AmeriCorps are also eligible for the grand prizes.

Deadline
Your entry MUST be received no later than 5:00 p.m. EST on Monday, November 5, 2007. Recommended postmark date: Tuesday, October 30, 2007. The NCLR- Best Buy Emerging Latino Leaders Scholarship Program is not responsible for lost, late, incomplete, stolen, or misdirected mail. NCLR and Best Buy reserves the right to amend or stop the contest without advance notice.
