2010 Information
The National Council of La Raza (NCLR) and Best Buy Children's Foundation (Best Buy) support Latino youth who are equally committed to academic achievement and volunteerism. The NCLR – Best Buy Emerging Latino Leaders Scholarship Program provides an opportunity for Latino high school seniors to share their leadership experiences. Applicants should submit an essay in response to the following topic:
Please discuss the biggest challenge or challenges that you have encountered as a Latino youth. How have these difficulties impacted your life and personal goals? Describe your determination to overcome these obstacles and how you have worked to excel beyond your existing limitations. How have these experiences inspired leadership in your life? Lastly, please discuss specific ways in which you have positively influenced your community.
Essays should include a brief description of your individual leadership work with a group or community organization and how you plan to expand your involvement in the Latino community.
How to Participate
High school seniors of Hispanic descent currently enrolled in high school (with a minimum GPA of 2.0) can participate in the NCLR- Best Buy Emerging Latino Leaders Scholarship Program. The application is a two step process. Essay submissions will be accepted through the electronic application process. Supporting documents must be mailed. Please read the Rules and Guidelines page for complete instructions.
- Students must fill out an online registration.
- Students must upload an essay on the registration page. Please submit essay as a Word document.
- Students must submit via mail
1) letter of recommendation from a community leader or mentor
2) release form and high school information form

Selection Process
An independent panel of judges will select three winners. All winners will be notified by Friday, May 28, 2010. The decisions of the judges are final.

- One grand prize winner will receive a one-time payment of $15,000.
- One winner will receive a one-time payment of $5,000.
- One winner will receive a one-time payment of $2,500.

Your entry MUST be received no later than 5:00 p.m. EDT on Friday, April 30, 2010. The recommended postmark date is Monday, April 26, 2010. NCLR and Best Buy reserve the right to amend or stop the contest with no advance notice.
